Design Management Courses and Teaching Exploration

Foreword

The inclusion of design management courses in the teaching of higher education is practically necessary. The UK's CNAA (1992) pointed out that proper use of management design capabilities will benefit the recovery of industries, and the study of the American Institute of Design Management Supervisor Freeze (1992) emphasized that management educators also gradually understand the importance of design as an enterprise resource, and added design management courses to the MBA curriculum. Pratt Academy has given a design master's degree program to designers with practical experience in view of the importance of design management in design practice.

This article collects design management courses at the University of Leeds, Leicester and Kingston, UK, design management courses at the University of Staffordshire and Coventry in the corporate world, and design management courses for MBA students at The University of Michigan and The Universitv of North Carolina. Pratt College For the design of the Institute of Design Management, which was created by the designer, a comparative analysis of the course content and teaching methods was conducted to understand the main points and methods of the current design management course teaching, and to provide reference for designing the design management course in the education sector.

Design Management Teaching Objectives and Goals

The purpose of the teaching differs according to the background of the students. Take the MBA course to include design management courses as an example. Its purpose is to help MBA students understand the design and management design under the organizational structure (Blackburn & Chapin, 1994). Consider the design management knowledge and skills students need to facilitate the successful operation of the company (Williamson, 1994). The curriculum for students with a design background is designed to cultivate the management expertise of design professionals and to confirm their leadership role in a competent corporate environment (Pratt, 1995). Bruce and Davies-Cooper clearly point out two types of design management courses. State: One is to include design management as part of the current management curriculum; the other is to inject management into the design curriculum, and they illustrate the different purposes of the courses offered by different people as examples.

1. The purpose of designing and managing courses for marketers is:
Increase visual perception.

2. Markets and management courses for designers. Introduce management concepts, tools and techniques, such as competitor analysis and corporate planning.

The implementation of current design practices requires a combination of interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary personnel, including designers and other non-designers to complete the design work, and the designer is assigned as the design team leader or When designing managers, most of them lack effective management skills and training in response to the current complex and volatile corporate environment. If this position is submitted to an MBA manager with no design experience, he finds that although he is qualified for management, he does not have The ability to guide design decisions and establish design policies and strategies (Pratt, 1995). Therefore, for designers, the design management curriculum should be more focused on the professors of management knowledge, and managers should focus on design knowledge.

To integrate the teaching objectives of Leeds, Leicester, Pratt and other schools, the Design Management Course aims to help students understand:
1. Factors that influence creativity and innovation;
2. The correlation between product and production, design;
3. Design procedures and provide support systems for design;
4. The nature of the work performed by industrial innovators and industrial designers: and
5. Various legal protections related to design, further training students with the ability to:
1). The ability to draw up design strategies;
2). Determine the ability to design policies;
3). Ability to write design project specifications;
4). The ability to monitor and control the progress of the design project;
5). Defining, analyzing design issues, assessing design information and evaluating research methods;
6). Select the designer's ability and so on. In general, the goal of the design management curriculum is to develop students' ability to design and design, design control, and design execution management, which do not include design organizations and are not designed to develop students' design and execution capabilities.

Design management teaching content

The teaching content of design management courses is based on the design and management related courses, and then the design and management combined courses are the mainstay. The curriculum of each school has its focus on the content of the courses because of the different teaching purposes and teaching objects. different. This article analyzes the orientation of the curriculum content of each school by design (D), management (M), design management (DM), design related (Dr), and other (O) five major categories. Design (D) refers to the curriculum at the core of the design department; Management (M) is a course of business and other business departments; Design Management (DM) is a combination of design and management of two subjects; Design related (Dr) They are classified as non-core courses in the design department; those who cannot be classified are classified as other (O). Based on the principle of the above classification and the analysis of the course name as a unit, you can understand the general direction of the course content (see Table 1).
