In the 1997 square kilometers of land in Shenzhen, there are 25,686 overseas Chinese enterprises. At the beginning of reform and opening up, Hong Kong businessmen, together with overseas Chinese businessmen, became the first group to come to Shenzhen to set up factories. In the past 40 years, as an important force to promote economic development in the Mainland, Hong Kong compatriots have been actively participating in the process of reform and opening up, and have drawn a great deal in the Pearl River Delta.
Dare to be the first to grasp the opportunity of reform
In 1985, 43-year-old Ma Jieyu came to Nantou, Shenzhen, and acquired a garment factory and successfully modernized it. At that time, Hong Kong's economy and society were in a period of transition, land rents and labor costs increased, and labor-intensive industries gradually declined. Driven by Ma Jiezhen, a large number of Hong Kong businessmen crossed the Luohu Bridge and came to the Pearl River Delta.
“When I first came to Henggang, Shenzhen, it was still a barren mountain, the houses were dilapidated, the traffic was extremely inconvenient, and the infrastructure such as water and electricity was also very imperfect.†Looking at the current Henggang, the highways are accessible, and the high-rise buildings are rising. For 40 years, I changed my appearance here. Looking back on the past, Ma Weiwu, chairman of Lijia International Group, was deeply touched. In 1986, Ma Weiwu opened the first factory for packaging and printing under the Guanyin Mountain in Henggang, Shenzhen. He introduced advanced equipment from Hong Kong and invited Hong Kong masters to train and guide the mainland technicians, gradually overcoming the difficulties in software and hardware.
"At that time, many entrepreneurs were successful in reforming and opening up their homeland. There is actually no bottom in their hearts." Ma Weiwu told this reporter. In the face of this waiting land, they do not have much experience to learn from. At that time, Ma Jieyu had invested in seven countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, South Africa and Thailand. "But my roots are in the mainland, the country is reforming and opening up, we should go back to support. We have invested in so many countries, why not return to their local investment?"
Facts have proved that these Hong Kong businessmen who came to the mainland at the beginning of the reform and opening up seized the opportunity with the courage to dare to be the first and the heart of the motherland. They brought capital and modern technology to the mainland, and they also gained development opportunities in Shenzhen, which is separated from Hong Kong by a river.
Industrial transformation and the times
After the success of the garment factory, Ma Jiezhen found that it was difficult to find a good place to eat in Shenzhen at that time. “The things are not very good, the sanitation environment is not good, and the high-quality hotels are lacking.†This made him see the opportunity. In the 1980s, Shenzhen still used the “three to one supplement†as the main form of trade, with the secondary industry as the development focus. Why not open a high-quality restaurant in Shenzhen?
In 1988, the first Jianing Na Chaocai Restaurant in Shenzhen, founded by Ma Jiezhen, was completed in Luohu District. After the opening of the restaurant, the business was booming, and the turnover in only two years was the sixth in the country. Since then, Carrianna has opened branches in more than a dozen mainland cities such as Guangzhou, Kunming, Chengdu, Shanghai, and even opened to Thailand, Canada and other countries, becoming the leading Chinese food multinational food group.
The forward-looking vision of advancing with the times is not limited to this. In 1991, Ma Jieyu took a piece of land adjacent to the Shenzhen Railway Station and decided to build a commercial area here.
Initially, this land was not optimistic: low-lying contiguous bungalows, noisy night market stalls, not to mention the rain that accumulates water on the knees. But today, there are four buildings in the Jianingna Friendship Plaza in Luohu District, Shenzhen, which has driven the prosperity of the Luohu District business district.
From the garment factory to “Jia Ningnaâ€, as the honorary chairman of Carrianna Group Holdings Co., Ltd., Ma Jiezhen created his own gold signboard in the pioneering past decades.
Looking at the trajectory of Hong Kong businessmen's development in the Mainland, it is not difficult to find that transformation and upgrading and advancing with the times are their commonalities.
In the second half of 2009, the State Council issued the "Cultural Industry Revitalization Plan", and Ma Weiwu immediately proceeded with the transformation and upgrading of the group to transform the original old factory building in Henggang, Longgang District, Shenzhen. In 2011, Ma Weiwu built the Lijia Creative Culture Industrial Park to combine printing and creative culture and new industries to promote environmentally friendly packaging and printing. In 2014, he also established the Lijia Environmental Packaging Printing Industrial Park in Dongguan Qiaotou to further deepen the transformation and upgrading of the Group.
In 2003, five groups including Carnation, Lijia, Hong Kong Jianye, Minsheng and Jinghui jointly invested 2.6 billion to build South China International Industrial Materials City in Pinghu, Shenzhen. Nowadays, South China City has become the first base in Shenzhen and even the country to integrate the five major manufacturing materials such as textile and garment, electronics and printed paper packaging, and create a new model for the development of China's modern logistics industry.
Love Sangyu promotes Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation
Behind the success of the business, Ma Jiezhen, Ma Weiwu and other Hong Kong businessmen have never forgotten to return to their hometowns and return to the motherland.
Building schools, repairing hospitals, donating funds... They are feeding back hometowns in a similar way, contributing to areas such as health care, community, disaster relief, pension, security and education.
When serving as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Ma Jiezhen actively fulfilled his duties of participating in the political and political affairs, established the Foundation for Justice and Courage in Shenzhen, and donated money to the Shenzhen Police Foundation and the Guangdong Chao Opera Foundation. In order to strengthen contact with overseas Chinese, he also led the establishment of the Shenzhen Foreign Investment Enterprise Association and the Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Business Association.
"I hope to publicize the various preferential policies for China's reform and opening up, so that overseas Chinese know more and return to the motherland to invest more." Ma Jieyu said. He also actively offered advice and suggestions for "strengthening cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and complementing the advantages of the two places." At that time, from Hong Kong to the Mainland, there was no "two-way license plate", and it took an hour to get through. Today, "Shenzhen-Hong Kong integration" has gained wide consensus, and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail has also been opened. It takes only 14 minutes to take the high-speed train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.
In 2003, due to Ma's outstanding contribution to the Mainland and Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government also awarded Ma Jingwei and his son Ma Hongming the Bronze Bauhinia Medal. "If I don't invest back in the mainland, my business will not develop like this. As a Chinese, we hope that the country will develop better in the future," Ma said.
Ma Weiwu also used his actions to practice the spirit of patriotism and love for Hong Kong. Under his active referral, planning and efforts, in March 2002, China Packaging Technology Association (now China Packaging Federation) successfully joined the Asian Corrugated Box Association, which greatly enhanced the world's competitiveness. In 2005, Ma Weiwu was awarded the "World Outstanding Chinese Award". Today, his children have already held important positions in Lijia International Group, and the batons involved in China's reform and opening up have successfully passed to the next generation.
With the promotion of the “Belt and Road Initiative†and the construction of the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, Hong Kong entrepreneurs will continue to contribute to the development of the motherland and will gain more from the development of the country.
