China University of Science and Technology has made important progress in the field of protein design

Recent breakthroughs in protein design have been made by Professor Liu Haiyan and Associate Professor Chen Quan from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Science and Technology of China. Their groundbreaking research successfully translates a target protein structure into a complete amino acid sequence, marking a significant advancement in the field. The study was recently published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

Proteins are essential molecules that carry out most biological functions in living organisms. They are long chains composed of amino acids arranged in a specific order. The research team developed a novel statistical energy function for protein design, which significantly improves upon existing models in key aspects, as supported by theoretical analysis.

This new approach represents a major step forward in de novo protein design—designing proteins from scratch based on desired structures. According to Professor Liu, the method not only matches but in some cases surpasses the performance of current state-of-the-art techniques. This development opens up exciting possibilities for future applications, such as designing more effective protein-based vaccines and therapeutic drugs.

The work highlights the growing potential of computational methods in life sciences and underscores the importance of integrating advanced algorithms with biological insights. With further refinement, this technique could revolutionize drug discovery and personalized medicine, offering a powerful tool for scientists around the world.
