Co-op Supermarkets and D&D International Wines, together with Broadlands Winery, plan to reduce the weight of the original 750-ml wine bottle from 460 to 345 grams, a drop of 25%. In order to save 530 tons of glass per year, Co-op supermarkets decided to “slim down†their own California wine series. By reducing the weight of wine bottles, 450 tons of CO2 emissions will be reduced each year.
Co-op supermarket is the first retailer to slim down its own wine brand wine bottles. Since 2008, they have begun to reduce the weight of wine bottles designed to save 131.5 tons of glass annually and reduce emissions of 110 tons of carbon dioxide. Up to now, Co-op supermarkets have used 60 light wine bottles for their own wine brands, saving a total of 860 tons of glass and reducing 720 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
