The New York University LaGuardia Studio utilizes opportunities for interdisciplinary courses to provide innovative print services to students, teachers, alumni, researchers, and visiting artists. Services include 3D scanning and 3D printing, and many university communities have created a variety of interesting projects such as Komodo dragon models, prostheses, 16th century Polyglot Bible entertainment and 3D printed oncology models. The last item is the ongoing two-year clinical trial between the biomedical imaging PhD candidate and Stratasys.

Buckland and Wake and Stratasys J750, through full-color, patient-specific models, can better visualize patient anatomy. Nicole, a Ph.D. student at the New York University Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the Saxler Institute, visited LaGuardia Studios and used her Stratasys J750 3D printer in collaboration with New York University's Department of Urology to hope to establish better patient care standards.
Wake explained: “We started a new collaborative project together with radiology and urology 3D printing kidney and prostate tumor models.
The full-color, multi-material J750, which Stratasys launched at OtterBox's headquarters last spring, has been used to make innovative products such as smart phone cases, glass sculptures, colored eyeglasses, and neurosurgical training simulators. Wake is using it to create patient-specific, color 3D printed kidney and prostate models. She is working with doctors to personalize medical models for these organ tumor patients.
"This is a completely new field for surgeons. These are actual patient models. We can use models for preoperative planning or preoperative guidance," Wake said.
"You can be the best surgeon in the world, but it's very useful if you have a 3D model. It provides guidance and greatly improves the success rate of comprehensive surgery. The surgeon I work for told me that planning with a 3D model can save the operating room Time, and ultimately improve the patient's efficacy.
These models help guide surgeons in the operating room to better understand the patient’s illness and their care and can also be used to train medical students.
"The 3D model helps explain the disease to the patient, which is very helpful because the patient does not usually understand how to interpret radiological images," Wake said. "Having a model to show the patient's cancerous structure or lesions, as well as the organ itself and the surgical plan is very helpful to all participants. We can also use 3D models to teach our medical students specific anatomy and pathology.
Wake is currently conducting a clinical trial with Stratasys to investigate how these full-color, multi-material 3D print models can improve patient care. As part of the NYUSOM randomized prospective study, she will use the Stratasys J750 to print 100 patient-specific kidney and prostate tumor models and then organize the effects of the 3D print model on preoperative planning rather than using traditional 2D films to prepare.
She hopes that the surgeon will be able to “lay the groundwork for a new standard of patient care†by using a 3D printed medical model.
