[China Packaging Network News] Mitsui Chemicals and Japan Catalyst, a joint venture, recently showcased an innovative technology called "PolymarlMATCZ," a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) material that can be molded in just a few minutes. This advanced composite offers a specific strength that exceeds that of aluminum alloys and is comparable to magnesium alloys, making it a promising alternative for lightweight and high-performance applications.
The material is produced using the Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) forming method. Unlike traditional techniques, where carbon fibers are woven into a fabric, this process involves cutting the carbon fibers into lengths ranging from tens of millimeters to about 100 mm. These fibers are then impregnated with a thermosetting resin before being compressed and heated in a mold. The result is a high-quality composite with excellent mechanical properties.
One of the key advantages of this new method is the significantly reduced molding time—just around four minutes—compared to the previous Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) technique, which required approximately 160 minutes. This improvement not only increases production efficiency but also reduces energy consumption and costs.
Additionally, the material exhibits excellent flow characteristics during the molding process, allowing it to fill even the most intricate details of the mold. This makes it ideal for creating complex shapes with features such as bosses and ribs, which are often challenging to achieve with conventional methods.
