France develops ultra-thin aluminum RFID tags that are comparable to paper

Recently, French researchers have developed an ultra-thin aluminum RFID tag that can be mounted on paper. This technology not only reduces the amount of metal and reduces the cost of the label. The greater significance lies in expanding the range of applications of the label. In the future, labels can be printed on a form or leaflet.

RFID tags are an alternative technology for printing bar codes. They provide an automated means of allowing items' related data to be transmitted between devices (common devices including transponders, readers, etc.) without direct contact. In fact, unlike bar codes, read and write operations of RFID tags are no longer strict. However, the price of RFID tags is relatively expensive, which also limits its popularization and application.

However, this label developed by France has a great cost advantage. Electromagnetic etching and electroplating techniques are often used to embed the antenna of a tag into a plastic object, and offset printing and screen printing techniques are used to embed the tag into the paper. The researchers who invented the above label stated that nowadays, only a simple thermal evaporation process can be used to shape the aluminum coil antenna on paper and form a complete RFID tag. Aluminum is cheaper than copper or silver and is currently widely used on various labels. Research shows that this method will reduce the cost by one-fifth, which will be a great boon for millions of users of usage labels.

“The prototype of this tag can be read well by the reader. Next we will combine various RFID chips to optimize this solution. We believe this will be a big step forward in the application of RFID technology to paper thin items. The research member described it.
