BPA is widely used in baby bottles, CDs, food containers and other plastic products, and is ubiquitous. Previously, animal experiments have shown signs of cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer in mice exposed to BPA, raising concerns about the safety of BPA.
This time, British and American researchers compared data on the physical health of 1,455 American adults collected between the US Department of Health in 2003 and 2004.The study found that more than 90% of the respondents detected BPA in their urine. In the group with the highest levels of BPA, the number of people suffering from heart disease and diabetes was more than double that of the lowest group.
Frederic von Zar, professor of biology at the University of Missouri, said that this is the largest study to date on the human impact of BPA, and for the first time pointed out that there may be a link between BPA and heart disease and diabetes.
Undecided
However, von Zar also pointed out that the study failed to prove that BPA is the culprit leading to heart disease and diabetes.
One of the study's authors, David Meltzer, a researcher at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, said that the study failed to prove that BPA is the only possible cause of heart disease and diabetes. Although other factors are unlikely to cause disease, researchers have not ruled out.
On the other hand, researchers cannot explain the causal relationship between BPA and heart disease and diabetes.
Lisa Schwartz, a researcher at the Dartmouth College Institute of Health Policy and Clinical Practice in the United States, said that it is impossible to rule out the subject’s risk of having a heart attack or diabetes, leading to a decrease in BPA resistance and an increase in BPA.
The researchers hope that through further research, they can find direct evidence of BPA's pathogenesis.
"Getting more direct evidence will be a good thing," Melzer said.
Controversy
The study was attacked by U.S. plastic product manufacturers. They believe that the new report does not prove that BPA is harmful.
The American Chemical Society, which represents a plastics manufacturer, said that the research process is flawed and the results only indicate a relationship.
The American Chemical Society said in a statement: "As the authors of the study said, they did not come to the conclusion that BPA caused health problems. They just explained the statistical connection."
However, Anna Soto, a researcher at the Tufts University in the United States, believes that research is enough to attract attention. The government should take action to limit the use of BPA.
"We can't wait until we have done more research to act to protect people's health," Soto said.
Previously, the National Institute of Toxicology under the U.S. National Institutes of Health had set the level of potential hazard warnings for fetuses, infants, and children as "moderate attention", but the adult hazard rating was still "negligible."
Today, some U.S. state governments have begun to consider limiting BPA. The Associated Press said that the Canadian government has proposed prohibiting baby bottle manufacturers from selling bottles containing BPA.
More and more countries begin sport. It's absolutely amazing of its high popularity. Such as SOCCER ,GOLF ,TENNIS,RUGBY ,CRICKET ,HOCKEY and so on.
