Principle and characteristics of bronzing process (on)

Anodized aluminum hot stamping foil is primarily used to transfer patterns or text onto the surface of a material using heat and pressure. Since anodized aluminum foil is the main material used in this process, it is commonly referred to as "bronzing." This article briefly introduces several hot stamping techniques and their unique characteristics.

1. Three-Dimensional Bronzing

Three-dimensional bronzing is a combined technique that merges traditional hot stamping with embossing. By using etching or engraving methods, both the embossing and the gold pattern are created on a pair of cooperating plates—female and male. This allows both processes to be completed simultaneously, reducing issues such as misalignment and improving efficiency and product quality. There are two main types of three-dimensional hot stamping equipment: flat pressing and rotary (round) pressing. Flat pressing machines, like those from BOBST, are widely used in high-speed and high-precision applications. These machines can achieve speeds of up to 7,500 sheets per hour with precision within 0.1 to 0.4 mm, making them one of the most advanced options available. On the other hand, rotary hot stamping is often used for web-based processing. The line contact between the die and the material helps avoid air bubbles that may occur in flat pressing, resulting in better quality and faster speed. However, due to the complexity of manufacturing round dies, the cost is higher, and the heat transfer efficiency is not as good, limiting its widespread use.

2. Holographic Bronzing

Holographic bronzing uses laser interference technology and spatial frequency coding to create images that offer vibrant colors, clear depth, and dynamic optical effects. It's widely used in anti-counterfeiting applications due to its high information content and visual appeal. Holographic hot stamping typically includes standard and precise positioning techniques, allowing for accurate placement of the holographic design on the final product.

3. Cold Bronzing Process

Cold bronzing is a relatively new technique developed in Europe and North America. Unlike traditional hot stamping, it involves transferring anodized aluminum foil under cold pressure. The process begins by printing UV ink, followed by applying a special UV-curable adhesive on top. After drying, the adhesive becomes highly viscous, and the aluminum foil is pressed onto the surface using metal rollers. The strong adhesion ensures the foil stays in place, while excess foil is removed during discharge. However, because the foil is only lightly adhered, the printed surface must be coated or polished to protect the design from wear.

4. Hot Stamping Followed by Printing

Some printing facilities now use a process where anodized aluminum is first hot-stamped onto cigarette packaging, followed by additional printing on the same surface. This method requires high-quality anodized aluminum that adheres firmly to the paper. If the foil is pulled back during printing, it can cause image defects and damage to the printing system. To prevent this, the right type of anodized aluminum must be selected based on the paper’s properties, ensuring it remains securely attached throughout the entire process.
