Last afternoon, the 3D Printing and China Zhizao Summit, organized by the Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Think Tank Research Institute, took place at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. The event brought together industry leaders, researchers, and enthusiasts to explore the future of additive manufacturing and its growing influence in various sectors.
Zong Guisheng, Chairman and CEO of Shenzhen Sandi Printing Technology Co., Ltd., shared his insights on the current applications of 3D printing, which he categorized into three main levels. First, there are highly mature applications in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical, where 3D printing is used for complex parts and customized solutions. Second, professional applications include design verification, rapid prototyping, and mold making by engineers and designers. Third, at the consumer level, desktop 3D printers have become powerful tools for hobbyists and makers.
According to Zong, the key to unlocking the full potential of 3D printing lies in adopting a "3D printing mindset" when it comes to product design, manufacturing methods, and application fields—rather than relying on traditional approaches. He gave an example: instead of using a spade to dig soil, one could use a smartphone to simulate the process, highlighting how digital thinking can enhance real-world tasks.
So what exactly is this "3D printing mindset"? Zong explained that it involves rethinking the way products are designed and manufactured. For instance, traditionally, car exhaust systems are made from multiple components that need to be assembled. With 3D printing, the entire part can be printed in one go, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and enabling more complex designs that would be impossible with conventional techniques.
