A sketch of a low-coverage genome sequence has been obtained from a piece of horse bone excavated in a permanently frozen site in Yukon, Canada, about 560,000-780,000 years ago. This is the earliest genomic sequence determined to date. The researchers compared these data with a draft genome sequence of a "late Pleistocene" horse, a draft genome sequence of five modern domestic horse breeds, a draft genome sequence of a Przewalski horse and a donkey. The results of comparative genomic studies indicate that the branch of Equus (equus), which produced all modern horses, zebras and donkeys, originated about 4 million to 4.5 million years ago, which is much earlier than previously speculated. The data supports the idea that Przewalski horses (an endangered native subspecies of the Mongolian grassland) represent the last wild horse population that survived.
