How does the PortableApps.com Carbide USB Flash Drive Stack Up?

When we called the PortableApps.com Carbide the safest and most secure USB flash drive on Earth, it sparked a lot of questions. To help clarify things, we've put together answers to the most frequently asked questions so far. If you have any other questions that aren't covered here, feel free to reach out.

1. How does the Carbide compare to IronKey?

We’ve included a detailed comparison chart for your reference. In addition to the differences outlined there, the Carbide is significantly more affordable than IronKey. Many former IronKey users are now satisfied Carbide customers, enjoying the same level of security at a better price.

2. Is the chip potted?

Yes, the entire PCB and all components—except for the rechargeable battery—are potted to meet FIPS 140-2 Level 3 requirements. You can view our FIPS policy certificate #1873 for more details.

3. Does a hack attempt trigger a secure wipe of the contents?

If the wrong PIN is entered 10 times in a row, the encryption key will be erased, making all data on the drive inaccessible. The drive can then be reset, which generates a new random encryption key. After that, the drive must be reformatted before it can be used again. It’s important to note that the drive doesn’t perform a secure wipe after a failed attempt—it’s not required by us.

4. Is the hack attempt counter persistent across power cycles or unplugging?

The counter is persistent until the next successful authentication, even if the device is powered off or disconnected.

5. Is the password limited to a 15-digit PIN (numbers only), resulting in 10^15 possible combinations?

Yes, the PIN is limited to a maximum of 15 digits using numbers 0 through 9, giving up to 10^15 possible combinations.

6. Is the actual cipher key random and dynamic with each reset, or is it static per drive? Is the code peer-reviewed?

The AES encryption key is randomly generated with 256 bits of entropy each time the drive is reset. Our code has also been peer-reviewed for security and reliability.

7. Are there any master keys or backdoors?

The Carbide supports one user PIN and one admin PIN, but there are no backdoors or master keys. All access is strictly controlled through these PINs.

8. Is the device waterproof or water-resistant?

Yes, the Carbide is IP-57 certified, meaning it is both water and dust resistant, making it suitable for use in various environments.
