Upholstered furniture is a key consumer durable that significantly impacts the quality of life for countless households. According to the national quality supervision inspection results released by AQSIQ on October 29th, 17 batches of products failed to meet the required standards, with 5 batches of mattresses exceeding the formaldehyde emission limits. This inspection involved a total of 180 batches, including 80 sofa samples and 100 spring soft mattress samples. Out of these, 163 batches passed the inspection—72 sofas and 91 spring soft mattresses—resulting in pass rates of 90% for sofas and 91% for spring soft mattresses.
The primary issues found in sofas included problems with processing materials and wood parts, as well as safety performance, such as anti-flammability. For spring soft mattresses, the main non-conformities were related to hygiene and safety (excessive formaldehyde emissions), physical properties of bedding materials like soft polyurethane foam, tensile strength, durability, and fabric performance.
Formaldehyde is a colorless, water-soluble gas known for its strong irritant properties. Prolonged exposure to low levels can lead to chronic respiratory diseases, while high concentrations may cause serious health issues, including damage to the nervous system, immune system, liver, and even increase the risk of cancers in the mouth, throat, skin, and digestive tract. The industry standard QB/T 1952.2-2011 sets a limit of ≤0.050 mg/m²·h for formaldehyde release in spring soft mattresses.
Among the unqualified products, five batches were identified, including the Royal Carriage Spring Soft Mattress from Changchun Royal Carriage Furniture Co., Ltd., the Xi Ding'an Slim Bailan Spring Soft Mattress from Harbin Furniture Co., Ltd., the rigid elastic brown mattress from Chongqing Zhongnan Bed Furniture Co., Ltd., the leisurely elastic palm mattress from Mancheng Furniture Factory in South Bank District, and the giant soft spring mattress from Xi'an Juwang Furniture Co., Ltd. The main reason for excessive formaldehyde emissions was the use of high-formaldehyde adhesives during fabric and material processing.
Compared to the 2013 national inspection, this year’s enterprise and product qualification rates have improved overall, though there was a slight decline in the qualification rate for spring soft mattresses. A total of 23 companies were found to have failed products, and 23 batches were rechecked. Among them, 21 batches were sampled from 21 enterprises, while two companies were not tested due to production halts. After testing, 19 companies passed, but two—Jiangxidian Royal Co., Ltd. and Changsha Yuhua District Bangshun Office Furniture Factory—failed the inspection twice.
In response to the findings, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has instructed local quality and technical supervision departments to follow the relevant provisions of the Product Quality Law and the Measures for the Administration of Product Quality Supervision and Inspection, ensuring proper post-inspection handling.
