Printing Classroom: Selection of Inkjet Printing Consumables

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in digital hard copy output as an alternative to traditional imaging systems (traditional photography). First, the issue of resolution, printing technology, color reproduction, and digital capture are the most concerned. When the print quality that was substantially equivalent to the silver halide image was obtained, the problem turned to the durability of digital printing and silver halide color photos. Customers just want to know: how long can it (printed image) stay?

There is a series of standardized accelerated aging tests in traditional photography to compare and predict the life expectancy of supports and images. ISO10977 (which will be described in more detail later) involves the measurement of image stability of color photosensitive materials and is divided into dark stability test and light stability test. This standard was established in 1993. Its revised version is being drafted and will be published soon. Since there is no standard for color hard copy, the test must refer to the precedent established in the photographic industry. The ANSI / ISO committee (a group of multiple manufacturers from the photography industry, ink and paper industry, inkjet technology industry, etc.) has been working on the ISO10977 revision since 1994, and has also begun to establish color hard copy image stability The test method works. Due to the rapid growth of new output technologies, new ink series, media and fast test results are needed. Because high-intensity / high-concentration, accelerated aging tests are detrimental to interaction defects, reliable long-term life prediction under normal display conditions is difficult to achieve. Moreover, color hard copy output materials are negatively affected by various factors, such as humidity, water, and many unpredictable factors. Therefore, a test method with a wider range than ISO10977 is needed. The task force divided into committees is studying the following issues:

· Water resistance

· Moisture resistance

· Thermal decay / dark stability

· Outdoor light stability

· Fingerprint test

· Other embrittlement problems and image analysis

Due to the exposure of the inkjet images observed in the past summer to the airflow (fading phenomenon), a task team called "Gas Fading" was just added in December last year. A specific set of inkjet printed samples were tested under a high-intensity (50klx) light source. After a long period of time (that is, one month), no obvious discoloration was found. But customers using the same materials claim that their printed image turns orange in just a few days:

"When many people get excellent results, others report that the images they printed turned orange after 24 hours."

In the testing of the research institute, the sample was installed in the mirror frame to isolate it from the airflow in the environment. The problem is that these test results do not include discoloration caused by different factors that may exist (such as air conditioning systems). Excluding the above specific conditions, the cyan dye in this special paper is more unstable to various environmental factors. As a result of the faster fading of the cyan dye, the image printed without the frame becomes orange in a short time.

"Reports and data obtained from other sources indicate that this paper is particularly sensitive to ozone, nitrogen, sulfur oxides, and some other atmospheric pollutants. When the concentration of the above substances is high enough and the printed image is directly exposed to the air, it may cause green The dye fades quickly. The color balance of the printed image shifts toward red / orange. This early ink fade was not due to exposure to light. "

Therefore, this newly established task force is trying to focus on the impact of environmental pollutants as a possible factor in the fading of printed images. Since the world has become more and more industrialized, the decline in the polluted environment has become more and more obvious. However, all these issues delayed the progress of the new standard.

In this study, various test conditions were selected to observe various fading behaviors of inkjet printed images.

Framed and unframed samples are exposed to high intensity light and air flow. Furthermore, the samples were exposed to ozone and nitrogen dioxide to better predict the impact of possible environmental pollutants. Choose dye and pigment series inks, each printing two different papers, to observe the interaction of ink and media and compare the stability of dyes and pigments. The reason for choosing inkjet printing is because of the popularity of its media in the field of digital imaging and its widespread application in office and home environments.

The purpose of this study is to better understand the complexity of inkjet printing fading behavior, and to demonstrate the difficulty of providing reliable testing. Analysis of the exposed samples revealed how environmental conditions affect the decline of inkjet printed images.
