The Application of CID Font in PDF Flow

The CID format is the latest font format published by the Adobe company in the United States. It has the characteristics of easy expansion, fast speed, good compatibility, simplicity, and flexibility. It has become a hot spot for domestic Chinese font development, and also provides quality for the fonts used by users. Ok, more fonts.

CID (Character Identifier) is a character identification code, which is divided into two parts: CIDFont and CMap. CIDFont file is the total character set, including all the commonly used characters in a specific language, sort these characters, their real serial number in the total character set is the name of the character CID identification (Index); CMap (Character Map) A table is a character map file, which maps a character's code to a character's CID identifier (Index). The CD font library is designed for the large character set market. The basic process is: First, according to Code, Index is found in the CMao table, and then the corresponding font data is found in the CIDFont file.

With the advent of the digital and networking era, it has brought new opportunities and challenges to the traditional publishing and printing industry. The digital workflow has made it possible to increase production efficiency, improve job management, and expand the needs of online businesses. In this case, the digital workflow based on PDF is ready. The full name of the PDF is the Portable document Format, meaning Chinese is a portable file format. The PDF digital workflow system uses a PDF file as an intermediate format for data transfer and is integrated in the computer. PDF has features such as embedded graphics, reliable, open, and suitable network transmission for high-end printing. The Postscript file generated by the layout software is converted into a PDF file by the Normalizer in the process. These PDF files have already embedded all the Chinese and Western font information and high-resolution pictures in the Postscript file, and will never waste the film or the media due to the missing pictures or text information on the page. With Adobe Acrobat tools, these PDF files can be properly previewed on PC and Mac platforms, as well as Chinese and non-Chinese environments, and errors can be found on the output page as early as possible. This is very useful for the customer proofreading pages at the printing and export centers.

The entire PDF digital workflow is as follows:

From this diagram you can see that PDF can go from generation to output in three ways:

Path 1: The embedding of the text part, using the ATMMID font library in the front-end through layout software such as PageMaker and Illustrator, and embedding the CID font library into the PDF file through the Normalizer. The generated PDF file can be transmitted to the corresponding RIP for interpretation via the Internet or other media. Therefore, the accuracy of the embedded CID font in the PDF file directly determines the accuracy of the RIP output.

Path 2: The user uses the ATMMID font library through layout software such as PageMaker and Illustrator. The generated Postscript file can directly generate a PDF document through a related program. The ATMMID font library is embedded in the PDF document. Because the ATMCID font is used at the front end, the accuracy is not very high, and generally there are limitations. In the case that the output quality requirements are not very high, the output can be directly downloaded through the corresponding RIP.

Route 3: If the user has high requirements on the output quality, the PDF file generated by Path 2 can be embedded in the PDF file through the Normalizer to achieve high-precision output.

So what are the advantages of the CID font library compared to the traditional TrueType font library?

(1) Easy to expand

As can be seen from the foregoing, it is very easy to add more character sets and encodings to existing CID fonts. The font developer can first create a basic character set, and later add the number of words to accommodate the larger market to meet the needs of different users.

(2) Fast

The speed of the CID font library is comparable to that of the OCF font library when printed on compatible printers. However, on the Postscript interpreter that directly supports CID fonts, the speed can be increased by 50 percent, enabling efficient processing of documents. Satisfy the needs of large business enterprises.

(3) Compatibility

Since all of the descriptors of the fonts in the CID font use the standard Typel format, they can be compatible with most operating systems, application software, and output devices to span different platforms such as Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX, and PDF workflows based on Intrnet, Higher requirements for compatibility.

(4) Simple

The CID font format greatly reduces the number of font files, reducing the number of documents from the OCF font library to only one, and reducing the storage capacity by about 15%, making the production, installation, and debugging of fonts relatively easy.

(5) High quality

In addition to maintaining the original Typel information, it also added black and white control tips to enhance the control of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean scripts with complex strokes.

(6) Anti-piracy

The CID font is essentially a Postscript program protected by copyright. It is easy to install anti-theft protection on CID fonts.

The above features of the CID font fully satisfy the many requirements of the PDF digital workflow, and it has strong practicality.

If the preview shows that there are errors in the page or the file needs to be modified before the RIP output, you can take the following approach:

1. If you find a small amount of text errors in the generated PDF file, you can directly modify it on Adobe Acrobat. However, since Adobe Acrobat cannot modify the PDF file arbitrarily, major changes still need to be returned to the layout software.

2. Before RIP output, as long as there is a CID font, you can modify the corresponding PDF file without having to send back to the manuscript side to re-edit, which can greatly improve work efficiency.

At present, Founder's universal CID font has been tested and it supports any RIP and various PS printers. The ElecRoc Workflow Management System is an example of digital workflow developed by Peking University Founder Electronics Co., Ltd. It is mainly used in the actual production environment of Chinese publishing and printing companies, commercial printing companies, plate-making output centers, etc. New user needs. We believe that the combination of Founder CID font and Founder Streamflow will bring you an overall improvement in efficiency, quality, management, and efficiency.
