In July 2015, it was reported that Shenzhen-based artist and technologist SexyCyborg, known for her creative use of technology, once used 3D printing to create a glowing "light skirt." Now, she's back with an even more innovative project: a pair of 3D-printed high heels. These aren't just any shoes — they're designed to discreetly carry a set of penetration testing tools.
The inspiration for the project came from the American TV series *Mr. Robot*. As she explained, “Some of the statements in the show aren’t entirely accurate, but they sparked my curiosity. I’m familiar with command-line interfaces and remote server management, which are part of my web development work. I’ve noticed that many so-called ‘hackers’ simply use standard IT tools — just without a graphical user interface.â€
This led her to explore the world of penetration testing. She wanted to find a practical way to apply these skills. But how could she do it without drawing attention? “If I wanted to test a business’s security, carrying a laptop would be too obvious,†she said. “Leaving a phone at the entrance is the norm for most security systems.†Her clothing didn’t have enough pockets, so she decided to design a high-heeled shoe that could hide the equipment — a "shadowless" shoe, inspired by the legendary martial arts master Huang Feihong’s "Foshan no shadow" foot technique.
The shoes were all made using 3D printing. She used TinkerCAD for the design and set the print layer thickness to 0.3 mm, which gave them a slightly rough finish. The material was PLA with a 20% fill rate, and a lot of support structures were needed during the printing process. According to her, the weight of the shoes is comparable to regular footwear and can easily support her body weight. However, she didn’t say much about comfort, which makes it a bit unclear whether they’re actually wearable.
Each shoe has a hidden compartment that can be accessed without removing the shoe. All you need to do is insert a penetration testing kit inside. While the tools themselves are technical, she isn’t aiming for real-world hacking. Instead, this project is more about making something visually striking and fun — a blend of fashion, technology, and a touch of cyberpunk flair.
