Groupon, a group buying company, unveiled an iPad-based point-of-sale device, Gnome, on Monday, while deeply integrating Groupon's own infrastructure, which the company hopes will be used to spur businesses to use the service.
Many Gnome products are designed based on this feature, which will make it easier for merchants to manage group buying activities. For example, those who have a Groupon app on their phone will automatically recognize them when they enter the storefront and allow them to trade without having to print a receipt or take out their wallet.
In addition, the system can exist as a stand-alone POS machine that can read transactions via credit or debit cards. This model, similar to its competitor Square's Square Register product, allows merchants to print, or send invoices, calculate tax rates and manage inventory.
In contrast to Square, Groupon will handle payment services through Gnome. A 1.8% credit card fee is charged for the transaction, plus 15 cents, in addition to a monthly fee of $10.
When it's all done, Gnome will be used as an operating system for a merchant to run its own store, and can create real-time promotions. Groupon said it hopes the Gnome device will be released to thousands of merchants this year.
Groupon is not a pure e-commerce site, it is a combination of e-commerce, web 2.0, Internet advertising and offline mode. Although its form of expression is group buying, the income model relies on collecting commissions, etc., but Groupon's future is highly uncertain.
