Degradable plastics are plastics that can degrade themselves in a short period of time under natural conditions.
Degradable plastics generally fall into four categories:
(1) Photodegradable Plastics— Incorporating photosensitizers in plastics to gradually degrade plastics under sunlight. It belongs to the earlier generation of degradable plastics, its disadvantage is that the degradation time is difficult to predict due to sunshine and climate change, so it can not control the degradation time.
(2) Biodegradable plastics - refers to plastics that can be completely decomposed into low-molecular-weight compounds under the influence of natural microbes (such as bacteria, mold, and algae). Its characteristics are convenient storage and transportation, as long as it is kept dry, no need to avoid light, a wide range of applications, not only can be used for agricultural plastic film, packaging bags, but also widely used in the field of medicine
(3) Photo-biodegradable plastics - a class of plastics combining photodegradation and microbiological degradation. It also has the characteristics of both light and microbially degradable plastics.
(4) Water Degradable Plastics - Adding water-absorbing substances to plastics can be dissolved when they are discarded in water. They are mainly used for medical and health appliances (such as medical gloves, etc.), and are easily destroyed and disinfected. Among the four degradable plastics, biodegradable plastics have received increasing attention along with the development of modern biotechnology and become a new generation of research and development hotspots.
