Jewelry 3D printing is on the rise!

3D printing has been sought after by many industries because of its free design concept, especially in the jewelry industry. 3D printing custom jewelry has almost become a new export for many young people to advertise their personality.

Lionel Theodore Dean graduated from the Royal College of Art in London and then entered the Italian top car design company Pininfarina. A few years later he set up his own design consulting firm and launched a full-size concept car at the 1989 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Although his design career started with car design, what really made him famous was the in-house products—especially lighting products, such as the Tuber9 lamp that had been collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Back in 2002, Dean was appointed as a home designer at Huddersfield University, where he started his FutureFactories digital manufacturing project, dedicated to the massive personalization of products.

Today, Dean's attention has turned to the jewellery sector, claiming that digital manufacturing is destined to "reshape the jewelry industry."

To this end, Dean printed a series of jewellery pieces in 18K gold 3D, which is part of a project called Precious. The project was co-operated by Delcam, precious metals supplier Cooksongold, Dean's FutureFactories, Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre, and Finishing Techniques, including some designers from the Birmingham City University Jewelry Institute.

“The use of metal additive manufacturing (ie 3D printing) allows you to create forms that are almost impossible to create with conventional means,” Dean said. “The jewelry industry is one of the first industries to adopt additive manufacturing technology, but indirectly. The means, they usually use 3D printing wax molds for casting, rather than direct metal 3D printer technology."

Dean believes that it will take time for jewelers to print jewelry directly using the metal 3D printing process, but this does not prevent them from exploring this aspect.

It was with Cooksongold that they worked together – through what they called the Precious M 080 laser sintering equipment – ​​that Dean was able to export his design directly through the machine. The Precious M 080 was developed by Cooksongold in collaboration with EOS, which is used primarily for 3D printing of precious metal objects.

“Ordinary laser sintering machines tend to create a lot of voids, and even some places can be trapped inside or lost. For high-value materials such as gold powder, it is important to avoid material waste, and the advantage of Precious M 080 is that Designed specifically for gold," Dean said.

During the Precious project, Dean also worked with software company Delcam, which also developed a software tool for rendering jewelry designs for 3D printing. Designers hope to release their commercial versions to the outside world in the future.
