Using gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC / MS) in accordance with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 8260 method for volatile organic compounds analysis is the most commonly used gas chromatography / mass spectrometry method in environmental laboratories. In order to increase profits and meet customer needs, many environmental laboratories need to analyze more samples more quickly to increase throughput. Using the EPA 8260 method to obtain high levels of throughput requires the laboratory to maximize the efficiency of multiple different steps in the analysis process, and the most important of these is the gas chromatography / mass spectrometry part. The technique shown here has some modifications to typical instrument parameters to significantly increase sample throughput.
