However, recently, Rob Scharff, a graduate student at Delft University of Technology, invented a soft robotic hand that uses air chamber sensing to react to the stress of the human body. Simply put, it is possible to shake hands with humans! And this robot hand is done in 3D printing.
This robotic soft hand was completed with the help of Materialise, using SLS technology and 3D printed with a flexible material similar to polyurethane. The palm of this hand contains an integrated bellows-shaped air chamber that responds to stress (ie the force from the person's handshake).
The design of this robotic hand is inspired by biodesign, which includes the human muscles of the real person and the trunk structure of the big elephant. And 3D printing to complete this hand, so that it can move as naturally as possible. In addition to its flexibility, the hand joints, thumb and wrist can be individually controlled to rotate in both directions.
Scharff said: "This project explores the possibility of using a flexible material 3D printed corrugated chamber as a sensor and actuator. This robotic hand that can only shake hands with people demonstrates that 3D printing technology can enable human-robot interaction."
Currently, this robotic hand is in the prototype stage and the research team will continue to improve. They even predicted that the robot hand could be applied to orthoses, prostheses, nursing robots, and the like.
