Waste plastic bottle recycling focuses on awareness

The hot summer season is gradually going away. There are obviously fewer people on the street carrying woven bags to pick up plastic bottles. According to a survey conducted by the reporter, dozens of recycling fields around Xi’an recycle plastic bottles of various types and are categorized, shredded, and packaged day and night.

"Bottle Mountain" surrounds Xi'an City

On September 15, the car was driving on a highway in Sanqiao, Xi'an, and it was far behind that it was able to see a "bottle mountain" inside a plastic bottle recycling yard, which was higher than the next two-story building. There are more than 20 workers in the stadium, busy with the sound of noisy machines. The boss of the ancestral hometown Zhejiang was thin and small, and the thick golden necklace on his neck kept shaking. He has been recycling plastic bottles for more than a decade in Xi’an. He is now in his early thirties and owns a fully equipped recycling yard covering nearly 10 acres. Last year, due to the financial turmoil, the purchase price dropped sharply, causing him to lose millions of dollars. This year's hard summer operations made him re-establish his confidence in doing it.

Sun boss introduced that from May this year, he recycles at least 2 tons of plastic bottles every day. According to the mineral water bottle of 50 1 kg, 30 bottles of 1 kilogram of Cola, green tea bottle of 35 1 kg, he will recycle about 76,000 bottles a day. A recovery period of 5 months, about 11.4 million plastic bottles.

According to statistics, there are at least 40 recycling yards like Sun's bosses in Xi’an, scattered in the southwest and northwest suburbs of Xi’an, and the south is the most concentrated. Sun boss estimated that a recovery period of Xi'an market can produce about 456 million plastic bottles, which would produce 12,000 tons of plastic waste each year if it is not recycled.

In the recycling yard, all the bottles were only recovered by weight. The plastic bottles with different packaging and shapes were crushed here. The women workers first removed the bottles and then sorted them by color. The next step is to use a simple crusher to pour the plastic bottles into pieces and pack them. After packing, they are transported to the fiber fabric processing factory in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces for a long time. Finally, the pieces are melted and then sprayed into a silk thread to become polyester fabrics. raw material.

Passive recovery method potential hazard

On July 6, the reporter found in Xi’an East Street that a bottle of mineral water, from the consumer’s purchase, drinking, to discarding, and then to the hands of scavengers, was the shortest only ten minutes. At the hottest noon, trash bins located in the mouth of the Hummer City had nearly 20 scavengers flipping plastic bottles in an hour.

More than 400 million plastic bottles each year in Xi’an City are recycled in this way.

At present, the only thing that reassures environmentalists is that the recycling rate of plastic bottles is still at a high rate of 80%. But this is achieved by the city's scavengers. It is a passive recycling method. These bottles are easily contaminated because they are mixed with other wastes during recycling.

Throughout the recycling process, there is a lack of supervision by government functional departments. Some recycled bottles are used by unscrupulous traders to recreate counterfeit bottled beverages. Such plastic bottles often contain certain heavy metals. If they are dissolved in beverages, they will cause harm to drinkers.

Experts call for mandatory recovery

Plastic bottled drinks are facing pressure from environmental protection. The world’s first bottled water decree was implemented at the beginning of 2009 in the town of Bondano, where the population of Australia was only 2,500. All merchants in the town will no longer sell bottled water, while foreign tourists are not allowed to bring bottled water. Filtered drinking fountains are provided on the main street to provide residents and visitors with free drinking water.

“China has more than 1 million tons of PET raw materials used each year, of which 80% is used to make various plastic bottles, showing how big the production volume of plastic bottles is.” Dong Jinshi, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Institute of Environmental Science, told reporters.

Dong Jinshi introduced that the long-distance transportation of bottled water consumes a lot of fuel, and about a quarter of the bottled water is transported by ship, train and truck before it reaches consumers. PET used in the packaging of bottled water must also be extracted from crude oil.

It is gratifying that China's Administrative Measures for the Recycling of Packaging Materials have taken initial shape and are pending approval from the relevant authorities. It is understood that since 2008, plastic bottles recycling machines have been tried in some communities in Beijing.

What is PET

English name Polythyleneterephthalate, referred to as PET or PETP, commonly known as polyester resin. It is a polycondensate of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol and is collectively referred to as thermoplastic polyester or saturated polyester together with PBT. Most of the plastic bottles produced in China are PET materials.

In 1946, the United Kingdom issued the first patent for the preparation of PET. After the purchase of the patent by DuPont, the United States established a production facility in 1953, which was the first to achieve industrial production in the world. In the early stage, almost all of PET was used for synthetic fibers (commonly known as Dacron and Dacron in China). Since the 1980s, PET has made breakthrough progress as engineering plastics. Researchers have successively developed nucleating agents and crystallization accelerators. Currently, PET and PBT have become one of the top five engineering plastics as thermoplastic polyesters.

At present, some countries in Western Europe have begun to use PEN materials in the market. This kind of material has the same preservation effect as glass bottles and is resistant to impact and easy to recycle.
