Korean corrugated carton industry development report

In Korea, some industry-leading corrugated box manufacturers continue to increase investment to further increase their production efficiency and gain greater market share. Although South Korea's domestic economy has slowed down and competition has become fierce, it has become an indisputable fact. In addition to upgrading the equipment and energy levels of existing factories, South Korea’s leading companies have also chosen to invest in areas where future packaging markets may have great development. factory.

At present, the main growth needs of the corrugated box industry in South Korea originate from the online packaging of households and the new packaging of agricultural products. The growth of the latter is mainly due to the increasing use of corrugated boxes for packing vegetables and fruits.

According to statistics from Korea Corrugated Packaging Association (KCCA), in 2014, the total output of corrugated boxes in Korea was approximately 5.3 billion m2, an increase of approximately 2.2%. The Association expects South Korea's corrugated box production growth rate of about 2.3% to 2.5% in 2015, while corrugated box production will total about 5.4 billion m2. If calculated in tons, the total volume of corrugated boxes in Korea in 2014 was 4.54 million tons, an increase of 3.6% from the previous year's 4.38 million tons.

“This year's growth is expected to be very small. Although corrugated cartons are a basic product package, the competition is becoming more and more intense and the market is approaching saturation.” Steve Kim said that he is a supplier of corrugated box machinery – Seeco Co., Ltd. of South Korea. The chairman of the board is also a member of the KCCA's executive committee. “Small and medium-sized packaging companies are concerned that the advantages of digital printing in short-term orders will impact other domestic packaging businesses,” he explained.

"Paper prices are not very strong, because the economy is going down, and many paper mills are in a very bad situation. They all claim that prices will increase next year, but almost no one believes they can succeed in the current market situation." Kim Say.

The domestic demand for food and beverage industry is currently the largest area for corrugated cartons in Korea, accounting for about 24% of the total; followed by clothing and textiles, accounting for about 16%; the third place is for agricultural products, accounting for about 13%; Is the packaging of household appliances, and other industrial packaging, the overall amount of about 11%, and finally the packaging of rubber and plastic products, accounting for about 7% of the total.

According to KCCA statistics, if measured in tons, South Korea's corrugated board production has increased by 11% over the past five years, while demand for corrugated board has increased by 15% over the same period. Kim also pointed out that the rapid growth of Internet shopping is one of the main reasons for the rapid growth of corrugated board production in the past five years.

More and more farmers are using small corrugated boxes to pack fruits and vegetables when buying retail packages, which has also created a surge in the use of corrugated box packaging. For example, in the past, it was customary to pack oranges in 15kg corrugated cartons, but now more tends to pack oranges in 5kg or 3kg boxes. “Consumers are no longer inclined to buy large packages of fruit,” Kim said. “Not only is orange, pears and apples are the same.” In the past. Most of the fruits are packed in cartons of 15kg or 10kg, but now they are basically packed in cartons of 5kg capacity.

Similar to this is the corrugated paper tray. In order to cater more to consumer demand for smaller and lighter fruit trays, a growing number of small-size trays replace the original large-size corrugated packaging. "The main reason for the reduction of agricultural products packaging and trays is that consumers prefer small quantities of packaging at the time of purchase, so the reduction of packaging boxes and trays is an unavoidable trend, and most of the packaging boxes and trays are printed in four colors and above. Main." He continued.

Food and beverage companies are still the largest industry for corrugated cartons. Kim pointed out that with the increasing demand for food and beverages in supermarkets, four-color printing has become the industry's standard for color printing in food and beverage packaging. “Food and beverages have become the areas with the largest amount of usage. The growth of these industries is very robust, and food and beverage products that have recently been exported to China have also seen a slight increase.”

For South Korea, China is a very important market. “We are benefiting from the overall growth in trade between Korea and China.” South Korea's large electronics and household appliances industry is another very important market in manufacturing. Most packages are used for household products, including refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions. Although some three-layer corrugated cardboard is also used for packaging refrigerators, most corrugated cardboard is used for packaging automotive components.

Although the development of large-scale enterprises continues to put pressure on small and medium-sized packaging companies, some small and medium-sized paper packaging manufacturers still play a very important role in the Korean packaging industry. According to the statistics of KCCA, there are about 108 large-scale corrugated box factories in Korea, and the total number of tile lines installed is 173. At the same time, the number of corrugated box manufacturers is approximately 600.

Recently, in order to ensure the long-term prosperity of the corrugated box industry, the newly appointed chairman of the KCCA, Kim Jinmoo, called on domestic large-scale corrugated box manufacturers to get along with each other more harmoniously. There should be no bad price war among members. Businesses have no advantage. KimJinMoo is the general manager of SansungL&SCoLtd. The corrugated box factory has two branches and its headquarters is located in ShiHeung city, which is 90km south of the capital Seoul. KimJinMoo was appointed chairman of the KCCA on February 27, 2015 for a four-year term.

"His strategy includes maintaining a closer relationship with the paper mills to stabilize paper prices and expand more markets at the same time." Kim explained, "Some fruits and vegetables have not been packaged on corrugated paper or paper trays so far. Therefore, our chairman still wants to push more farmers to use corrugated paper for packaging in this regard, and he is also promoting the use of corrugated packaging in cabbage and radish, which are used in South Korea and are growing. Rapidly, for our chairman, there are some major challenges, but also to ensure that our member companies can better cope with future market development,” Kim said.

New Capacity South Korea's largest corrugated box plant continues to invest in new equipment to increase productivity and increase production capacity. For example, Tailim Packaging Industries recently opened a new factory in Paju near the non-military zone in the northwestern part of Korea. The new plant is equipped with a Mitsubishi 2.5-mW cable, which is mainly used to produce double-layer corrugated cardboard, as well as a glue making machine and a Mitsubishi EVOL four-color printing linkage line. Tailim also plans to purchase two traditional four-color printing linkage lines installed in other branches. In addition, Tailim recently ordered a five-flat flat die-cutting machine from South Korea's local company Yongxin Machinery. Yongxin Machinery holds 70% of the die cutting machine market in South Korea.

Tailim Group became the headline of business news in April this year. According to news reports, Tailim Group and South Korea’s IMM private equity fund are negotiating mainly about the acquisition of Tailim packaging and Dongil paper mills, which means that investors are very optimistic about the future prospects of large-scale integrated paper packaging companies in Korea.

Daeyang Paper Products has also recently upgraded its equipment and capacity for its 10 subsidiaries. It has ordered several new tile lines and carton processing equipment, including two BHS 2.5-m-watt lines. The BHS tile line will be used to replace the existing one produced in Korea in the Chungju plant in the central region of Korea and the existing one in the Jiangshan factory in the southwest region. The two tile lines are planned for 2016. Years to install.

Daeyang also ordered two EVOL carton printing linkage lines from Mitsubishi, and Daeyang will have a total of seven Mitsubishi carton printing linkage lines. Earlier this year, Daeyang's factory in Benan installed a Mitsubishi tile with a 2.5m width and a speed of 450m/min. This tile line is mainly used to produce double-layer corrugated cardboard.

Wolsan also recently ordered two Mitsubishi carton printing linkage lines to be installed at the Chungju branch and the Daegu branch. The Chungju branch also ordered a Mitsubishi 2.5-m tile, which will mainly produce a single tile.

At the same time, the Asian group, which has three corrugated cardboard boxes and three paper mills, plans to build a corrugated box factory in Anshan, central Korea. It is expected that the plant will order two 2.5m-watt lines and 3 to 4 sets of corrugated carton processing equipment. Once the plant is successfully put into operation, it will undoubtedly further enhance the overall capacity of the Asian Group.

In addition, Sambo Group also built a corrugated box factory in Paju near the northern border of South Korea. The new plant was relocated mainly from the Bucheon plant near Seoul. The area near the Bucheon plant has become a residential area, so some of the nearby factories are required to relocate to other industrial areas. The corrugated box plant's equipment includes an Isowa tile, which was upgraded in 2014.

In order to increase production capacity, South Korea Export Packaging Corporation recently installed a tile line with a width of 2.5m and a speed of 450m/min.

Machinery equipment suppliers including Taiwan Baowang also played a role in the overall upgrading of equipment in South Korea. Baowang sold a carton printing linkage line last year to the Tailim group's subsidiary Taicheng Group. In addition, Cheil also installed a Baowang tricolor carton printing linkage line, which is mainly used to process and produce flat-panel TVs. .

In Gimhae, a city near Busan in the southeast of South Korea, a large-format printing press was installed to print fine corrugated cardboard. The company mainly produces pharmaceutical packaging for F楞 and G楞, as well as the inner packaging of beverages. The new equipment is mainly used to replace previously used cardboard packaging equipment.

The Changing Market According to the investment scale of the major companies, South Korea's corrugated box production capacity far exceeds the actual demand. KCCA expects that the current production capacity will exceed 35% and the total annual output will reach 7.1 billion m2. The total production in 2015 is expected to increase by about 10% to 7.8 billion m2. With more and more equipment orders, the association predicts that the production capacity will increase by 20% in 2016. In this case, the total output will reach 9.3 billion m2, which means that the production capacity exceeds 65%.

At the same time, the price of packaging cartons has been declining, with an average reduction of about 10% in 2014. Kim said, "In Korea, the competition among the five corrugated carton manufacturing groups is fierce. They occupy 60% to 65% of the domestic market share, and their share is increasing every year, mainly because they are constantly investing in the construction of new ones. factory.

At the same time, the promulgation and implementation of the Korean Labor Law is expected to further exacerbate the use of new equipment by corrugated box manufacturers. The number of factory workers and their daily working hours will be further reduced. “Labor cost is a big problem. At present, general enterprises implement two shifts in 24 hours, but the new labor law that the government will enact for more than 10 hours is an illegal act,” Kim said. “So many companies will not Instead of investing in new high-efficiency equipment to make up for the reduction in labor time, the new labor law is not mandatory at present, but it is expected that it will be fully implemented by 2018. This is also to provide young people with more job opportunities."
